Beyond HoneyComb — Elevating the Quality of Our Dining Experience

In this newly launched “Startup Series”, I will be covering start-ups that I personally find interesting and relatable, those that may not be too well-known to the public.

Beyond Honeycomb at CES 2022

One industry that went through massive changes during the pandemic is the foodtech industry; and I am not just talking about rise in food delivery ( DoorDash or Uber Eats) or grocery delivery (Instacart, Weee!, GoPuff). More broadly, foodtech industry has experienced industry catalysts such as evolving consumer behavior, supply chain dynamics, technological innovation, and emphasis on ESG. We saw a lot of investment in delivery models for meals and groceries, meal preparation kits, ghost kitchens, and order aggregation tools. An increasing number of consumers became particular about consuming alternative-protein and food with sustainably sourced ingredients and low carbon footprint. Before I deep dive into one of my favorite foodtech start-ups, let me first define foodtech industry.

Scope of Foodtech Industry

Foodtech industry can be mainly categorized into 5 sub-verticals:

  1. Bio-engineered foods: novel consumer packaged goods and commercial ingredients such as alt-protein.
